ACTION PLAN ON HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT

ACTION PLAN ON HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT

ACTION PLAN ON HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT

To appropriately handle and get rid of hazardous waste items, Landmark University will enter into contracts with authorised hazardous waste disposal facilities. For transfer to these facilities, all hazardous waste needs to be appropriately packaged, labelled, and recorded. Chemicals, solvents, batteries, pesticides, and radioactive materials are examples of hazardous waste that should be disposed of or handled improperly to prevent contamination of the community’s air, water, and soil as well as negative health consequences. Since it includes materials produced during healthcare operations at hospitals, clinics, labs, and research centres, medical waste is also quite important. It consists of pathological waste, pharmaceutical waste, infectious waste, and sharps (syringes, needles). Pollution of the environment and the spread of infectious illnesses might arise from improper handling of these medical waste materials. It is mandatory for all producers of hazardous waste to appropriately identify and separate their waste materials from non-hazardous trash.

  1. Hazardous waste needs to be kept in properly labelled, leak-proof containers. It is mandatory for all producers of hazardous waste to appropriately identify and separate their waste materials from non-hazardous trash. Hazardous waste needs to be kept in properly labelled, leak-proof containers.
  2. Storage of Hazardous Waste: A specific location must be used for the storage of hazardous waste. This space needs to be safe, well-ventilated, and furnished with the necessary safety equipment. It is important to routinely check hazardous waste containers for damage or leaks.
  3. Training and Awareness: To guarantee that they are aware of the risks connected with these materials and the correct disposal techniques, all workers and students who handle hazardous waste must undergo the necessary training.
  4. All producers of hazardous waste are required to keep thorough records of the waste they produce, including information on the kind and volume of waste, when it should be disposed of, and how. When necessary, these records must be made accessible for regulatory inspection and kept on file for a minimum of three years.
  5. In the case of an accident involving hazardous waste, all staff members and students are required to adhere to the specified emergency response protocols. These protocols will be placed in approved locations and distributed through training.
  6. Sanctions may follow noncompliance with this hazardous waste disposal action plan. All members of the university community have an obligation to notify the proper authorities of any infractions or concerns pertaining to the management of hazardous waste.
  7. This action plan will be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. Updates will be made as necessary to reflect changes in hazardous waste management practices and to promote environmental sustainability.
  8. This Hazardous Waste Disposal Action plan is effective upon adoption and will be communicated to all relevant stakeholders from January 15, 2023 till December, 28, 2023. It is the responsibility of the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Office to oversee and ensure compliance with this action plan.
