LANDMARK UNIVERSITY GUIDELINES ON REDUCTION OF MARINE POLLUTION THROUGH LAND-BASED ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS

Preambles:

Landmark university community has zero tolerance for indiscriminate and undisposed plastics materials and appropriately monitoring guidelines put in place to reduce plastic pollution on campus. Therefore, the following guidelines should be followed:

1.There is need for proper awareness and educational training and workshop for the students, staff and faculty on plastics waste and pollution management regularly on campus with special focus on impact of land-based activities.

2.The university should saddled with the responsibility to improve waste management on campus on the implementation of an effective and proper waste management systems as gateway weapon to reduce gateway to marine pollution. This includes proper disposal and recycling of materials to prevent them from ending up in the ocean.

3. The university authority will ensure proper treatment of sewage before being discharged into the ocean. Advanced sewage treatment technologies will be available for proper reduction of the pollution load.

4.  Standard and proper management of storming stormwater runoff within the university campus will be available to prevent pollutants like oil, chemicals, and plastic and biomass wastes from entering water bodies.

5. The university should put in place a robust plastic pollution control because freshwater ecosystem is the gateway to major marine plastics pollutants. Reducing single-use plastics and promoting recycling and alternatives in the university campus can make a significant impact.

6. The university management should put in place details programs on the Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture in the university community which will encourage sustainable farming practices such as the use of organic fertilizers promotion on campus. This will reduce the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can wash into rivers and ultimately reach the ocean.

7. The university management should continue to encouraging new innovative research into the sources and impacts of land-based marine pollution as source of guidelines drive in decision-making on marine pollution control through land-based activities.

8.The university should be ready to partners with foreign organizations involved in marine pollution control.
