LUBACA Town Gown Webinar: Unveiling the Mysteries of A 9-5 Job

On Friday 24th of May, 2024 the Landmark University Business and Corporate Analyst Students Association (LUBACA) in collaboration with the SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) held its Town-Gown webinar focusing on the topic “Unveiling the Mysteries of a 9-5 Job.” The event aimed at bridging the gap between academic training and real-world professional expectations, providing students with insights into the dynamics of traditional employment. The webinar had in present industry professionals, academic leaders, and students in an engaging and informative session who helped to demystify the 9-5 Job structure; providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the typical 9-5 workday, prepare students for employment by equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to transition smoothly from academic life to professional careers and foster collaboration; strengthening the relationship between the university and local businesses through dialogue and shared experiences.
Highlights of the session and topical discussions are herewith captured below;
- Bridging the gap: theory verse practicality in the work place: Mrs. Damilare Oloko Omogunsoye; Assistant Audit Manager, KPMG UK, addressed the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application highlighting the challenges, mismatched expectations, rapid technological changes and the complexity of practical problems. To bridge this gap, she suggests enhancing curricula with practical components, promoting continuous learning, providing internships and mentorships and fostering collaborations between academia and industry. Ms. Omogunsoye emphasized the importance of these strategies for better preparation of students for the workplace and enhancing organizational success through a more skilled and adaptable workforce.
- How to build a borderless career in the world of works: Mrs. Olamide Victor-Oluwaleye and Mr. James Praise explored strategies for developing a career that transcends geographical boundaries. They emphasized the importance of acquiring global skills, leveraging digital platforms, and building a diverse professional network. The key strategies they shared included continuous learning, cultural adaptability, and staying up to date with global industry trends. They also stressed the significance of remote work, online collaboration tools, and cross-cultural communication skills. The presentation highlighted the opportunities and flexibility a borderless career offers, enabling professionals to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
- Things I wish someone told me before I left school: Mrs. Oreoluwa Adekoya discussed on; things she wished she knew before she left school, where she talked about her life; being married to Adetowun Adekoya, a mum of two boys and her current position in workplace as the Head, Customer Supply Chain, Nestle Central & West Africa. She addressed the case of being book smart or street smart as a student, sharing to all attendees how their course of study does not determine or define their course in life rather It is the skills students possess that is of essence.
Conclusively the webinar received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. Students appreciated the practical advice and real-world insights provided by the speakers. Many expressed a newfound confidence in their ability to transition into the workforce and navigate their future careers.
