Objective of SDG 11: the SDG11 group’s was set up to provide and drive the University’s agenda to align with the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 11. This aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. It addresses urbanization challenges by promoting affordable housing, enhancing transportation systems, improving urban resilience, and encouraging cultural preservation. The Landmark University SDG11 group is dedicated to implementing projects and activities that support these objectives, aligning with the university’s vision to create a sustainable campus and foster community well-being. This report outlines our progress in 2023, including advocacy for road safety, the celebration of cultural heritage, and support for the arts, all contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable environment.
Key Activities in 2023
- Periodic Meetings:
Throughout 2023, the SDG11 group held periodic meetings to plan and review project activities, ensuring alignment with our goals. These meetings provided a platform for members to share ideas, track progress, and address challenges. By maintaining a consistent schedule, the group fostered a collaborative environment, allowing members to stay engaged and focused on achieving SDG 11 objectives. Each meeting included a review of ongoing projects, resource allocation discussions, and the development of strategies for upcoming activities.
- World Road Safety Week Program (May 12-16):
One of the primary events this year was the World Road Safety Week program, conducted from May 12 to 16, to educate commercial drivers, transport operators, and community members on essential road safety practices. This event, attended by a sizeable representation of commercial drivers under the aegis of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Omu-aran, included:
- Workshops on Safe Driving Practices: Experts led sessions focused on defensive driving, the risks of speeding, and the importance of avoiding distractions while driving. These workshops emphasized practical safety strategies and techniques to reduce road accidents.
- First Aid Training: A hands-on session was conducted on basic first aid, equipping participants with skills to handle road emergencies until professional help arrives.
- Distribution of Safety Materials: Participants received educational pamphlets and safety kits that included reflective stickers, first aid kits, and informational leaflets on road safety.
The impact of this program extended beyond the event, as participants were encouraged to share their knowledge and promote safer driving within their communities. This initiative strengthened our commitment to enhancing urban safety in alignment with SDG 11.
- Nativity Sundays:
To celebrate diversity and promote cultural heritage, the SDG11 group organized “Nativity Sundays” on the last Sunday of every month. These events encouraged students to wear traditional attire representing their ethnic backgrounds, fostering a spirit of unity and cultural appreciation. Activities included cultural performances, traditional music, and storytelling sessions that highlighted Nigeria’s rich history. Nativity Sundays allowed students to take pride in their heritage while learning about the traditions of others, supporting SDG 11’s objective of promoting cultural inclusion and diversity.
- Support for “Gifted Hands” Art Group:
The SDG11 group partnered with “Gifted Hands,” a creative arts group at Landmark University, to support creative expression and encourage the development of artistic talents. Throughout the year, the group collaborated on art exhibitions that showcased works in painting, sculpture, and craft, providing a platform for students to express themselves artistically. By supporting “Gifted Hands,” the SDG11 group promoted art as a vital part of a sustainable and inclusive community, encouraging students to use their talents to address social issues and contribute to the university’s cultural landscape.
Conclusion
The Landmark University SDG11 group has made meaningful strides in 2023, contributing to the realization of sustainable, inclusive, and culturally vibrant communities. Through regular meetings, educational programs like World Road Safety Week, monthly Nativity Sundays, and support for the arts, we have engaged the university community in actions aligned with SDG 11. These efforts demonstrate Landmark University’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, setting a strong foundation for continued progress in the coming years.
