INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO TOLERANCE FOR FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)

REPORT ON SDG 5 AWARENESS PROGRAM: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO TOLERANCE FOR FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)

Introduction

On February 6, 2025, the Landmark University SDG 5 Team, under the auspices of Landmark University Center for Research, Innovations and Discoveries (LUCRID), commemorated the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The event, with the theme, “Stepping up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM,” was incorporated into the Thursday Chapel Service. In attendance were the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Director of LUCRID, Professors, Faculty, Staff, and Students, reflecting the university’s strong commitment to gender equality and social justice.

Presentation and Insights

Dr. Mrs. Olushola Akanmode, SDG5 Champion, gave a presentation providing insights into FGM’s historical origins, health risks, and legal implications. She stated that research shows over 200 million girls and women globally have undergone FGM. In Nigeria, according to UNICEF, 19% of girls and women have undergone FGM, resulting in devastating consequences such as chronic pain, infections, infertility, and even death. FGM is a gross violation of human rights and a form of gender-based violence.

Impact on Education and Prospects

FGM can have a profound impact on a girl’s education and prospects. The physical and emotional trauma can lead to absenteeism, dropout, and limited opportunities. By eliminating FGM, we can empower girls and women to reach their full potential, pursue their dreams, and become leaders in their communities.

Key Discussions and Impact

The presentation emphasised FGM as a harmful cultural practice with severe medical, psychological, and social consequences. Discussions covered legal frameworks, education’s role in prevention, and the need for stronger advocacy. The session sparked meaningful engagement, deepening awareness and inspiring commitment toward gender equality and ending FGM.

Recommendations and Conclusion

To sustain the impact of this program, the SDG 5 Team recommends:

  1. Integrating FGM awareness into the university curriculum.
  2. Organizing regular advocacy programs.
  3. Reinforcing policy actions.

The event was a resounding success, reaffirming Landmark University’s leadership in championing gender equality. The SDG 5 Team remains dedicated to ongoing engagement and advocacy efforts to drive meaningful change.
