LMU SDG OUTREACH ON SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE

College of Agricultural Sciences under the Animal Science Program (Aquaculture and Fisheries Unit) in conjunction with Landmark University SDG 14 in partnership with God’s Grace Secondary school, Omu-Aran as part of community outreach to address Sustainable fisheries outreach by offered educational outreach through participatory approach on local community settings through educational assistance for free by SDG14 on Sustainable Management of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Tourism. 

The students were taught with the teaching aids that show case Organic fishing gears (Fishing tools) to harvest fisheries resources in a sustainable way. Examples of fishing gears demonstrated include passive fishing gears such as: Close fish valve traps, and active fishing gear (Hook and Line) as displayed by the students. Some of the students who enrolled for fisheries as a vocational subject were asked if they have questions at the end of this first teaching. The questions asked were adequately addressed.

Also, water management/conservation methods were discussed which are not limited to rainwater harvesting, taking short showers, and prevention of wastage of water at home and on the farm when there is no need to use such water at that moment. The community outreach through Secondary education was free which was anchored on SDG1, SDG 2, SDG 4, SDG 6, SDG 15, and SDG 17 was held on the 25th of October, 2023 at God’s Grace Secondary school, Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

Some of the students displayed the passive and active fishing gears for harvesting sustainable fisheries resources.

Some of the students that registered for Fisheries as a vocational subject as stipulated in the WAEC and NECO examinations with two of their teachers and the SDG14-Team Lead at the school premises on 25th October 2023.
