SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL (SDG) 2: ZERO HUNGER REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2023
Introduction
SDG 2- Zero Hunger has the focus to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture practices. This is foster through the promotion of indigenous and eco-friendly technology tailored towards addressing the mandate of SDG 2. As hunger and malnutrition remain significant global issues, Landmark University is highly committed to alleviating hunger as an agrarian University. This has been achieved through teaching, training, awareness and hand-on for the Staff, students and the community. This SDG is closely integrated with several other SDGs, as ending hunger improves health, boosts educational outcomes, fosters economic stability, and enhances gender equality.
Key Efforts of SDG 2: Zero Hunger in 2023
SDG 2 covers a broad spectrum of targets focused on eliminating hunger and malnutrition, increasing agricultural productivity, and ensuring sustainable food systems. Some of the efforts of the University at achieving these are:
- African Agripreneurship Development Centre (AADC): The birth of this programme is to enhance the agripreneurship capacity of the students across the University. The students are train on the different sections of agricultural production and value chains. Farm inputs were also provided for them as they practically engaged in exploring the hidden treasures in the earth. Remarkable success have been witnessed where many smart and savvy farmers have been birthed. The programme is directly linked to achieving SDG 2 goals and making healthy affordable food available to all especially within the university community.

- Farmers’ Food Market Day: The University along with SDG 1 & 2 do host the farmers’ food market day to promote the sales of fresh food products harvested from the students efforts on the field through their engagement at the AADC. This has promote accessibility to different varieties of food on the campus at reasonable prices. The students’ entrepreneural capacity have been enhanced as they were able to follow through from production to consumption.
- Farm Practical Training (FPT): The 400 level of College of Agricultural Sciences were engaged in FPT for a whole semester to gain practical experience in modern farming techniques
- Training and Awareness among SDG Members: There were series of meeting, training and sensitization among the members of the SDG on sustainable agricultural practices. Members were also encouraged to tailor their research efforts at minimizing hunger through robust agricultural production, minimizing waste and value chain addition. Ending hunger and achieving food security will require coordinated actions to improve food distribution, promote sustainable agriculture, empower smallholder farmers, and adapt to climate change. Conclusion
The need to ensure sustainable food production systems become more necessary now for the survival of humanity. This is because input resources for production are becoming scarce and expensive in the face of the teeming population to feed. Protecting the ecosystems, improving land quality, and reducing food loss and waste while mitigating the effects of climate change should be promoted at all fronts, cardinal to achieving the SDG 2 mandates. This will further fosters rural development, boosts economic growth, and reduces income inequality. The call for concerted efforts become more imperative now than ever.
